with obama? why can't politics be a matter of belief and honest disagreement, not hatred? why the sick little intramurals we saw today? we begin with senator jeanne shaheen of new hampshire. i want you to watch this back-and-forth between john mccain and the witness today, chuck hagel. let's take a look. >> were you correct or incorrect when you said that the surge would be the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since vietnam? were you correct or incorrect? >> my -- >> yes or no. >> my reference -- >> can you answer the question, senator hagel? the question is, were you right or wrong? that's a pretty straightforward question. >> well -- >> i would like to answer whether you were right or wrong, and then you are free to elaborate. >> well, i'm not going to give you a yes or no answer -- >> well, let the record show you refused to answer this question. now, please go ahead. >> if you would like me to explain why -- >> i actually would like an answer. yes or no. >> well, i'm not going to give you a yes or no. i think it's far more complicated than that, as i have already said

been identified. and the morning you see the obama administration interested in action rather than politics, you're going to have a different kind of tone. but we also should be looking at two things. what are the psychiatric problems and to what degree does the federal privacy law make it almost impossible to identify people who have psychological problems? i suspect we're going to find this tragic situation in alabama right this minute involves somebody with a deep psychological problem. and then, second, i think we have to look at, what is happening in big cities, where it is, in fact, largely pistols that are involved, and largely gangs that are involved? >> let me ask you about another big issue that we've been talking about a lot this week, the issue of immigration. there's been a big bipartisan push, you know, this week, including republicans, marco rubio, john mccain, talking about this comprehensive immigration reform. but, clearly, not all republicans are on board with this latest push. listen here to senator david vitter. >> i love and respect marco. i think he's just am

and president obama, i know i can help move forward the interest of this great state in this temporary period and i look forward to this honor of service. >> joining me now, politics reporter for boston globe. thank you for your time. let's get into the decision by duvall patrick. >> the govern nor was close about his decision making process and he did name a short list. a lot of names were out there. he chose someone loyal to him. policy-wise, there is no daylight between them. the governor likes personal and inspiring stars that he has. mo cowan has been a trusted aide, someone he relied on and rolling out ambitious policy agenda pieces. >> we know that barney frank sought this interim appointment on a couple of shows on msnbc and released a statement saying i know mr. cowan is committed to working hard and in socially fair and economically efficient matter on pending budget issues. i look forward to the election and providing president obama the support he deserves in carrying out the mandate he received in november. part of the reason is because of the fiscal issues we are facing with seq

opinion is, i don't like using children in political ads of any kind. i think consistently speaking, i also don't like the president when he uses children to sign a bill, obama care uses children as props, he used them when he did the executive orders about gun control. so those types of things on both sides to me i just have a problem with. children are innocent people in this world and they don't need to be political pawns. this is about a much bigger issue and i think we need to leave the children out of it. >> john avlon, even if you agree the only thing to me that then seems problematic about that ad with the nra is, look, the president's children do have protection. they're the children of the president of the united states. and i think it is fair to assume that in many ways those children are at higher risk than other children in this country. they are targets of kidnapping and other things. there's a reason they have that security. >> absolutely. i mean, that's why the ad doesn't pass the common sense test, there's a fundamental difference that everyone understands. if a democr

such weapons. that puts him at odds with many of his fellow republicans. >>> political insiders say it looked more like a campaign event than a presidential speech. president obama pushed for immigration reform before an enthusiastic crowd in las vegas yesterday. his proposal is very similar to one being put forth by a group of bipartisan senators. >> action must follow. we can't allow immigration reform to get bogged down in an endless debate. >> the two proposals focus on the same main principle. finding a way towards citizenship for the 11 million immigrants living here illegally. >> obviously, there's certainly -- the chances are higher now that something is going to happen on this issue compared to years past. the biggest hurdle, though, is that folks who aren't too crazy about this idea are saying in order for these things to happen, let's focus on border security. as long as folks can just flood into the country, it makes no difference what we're doing on the legislative side of things. that's going to become a sticking point. they're saying border patrol at the same time we're creatin
